What to Expect
This course meets every Monday, 4pm – 6:30pm PT (with a 3-hour online retreat on November 25 from 4pm -7pm PT). Click here to view the Time Conversion Chart.
Note: required to be a licensed mental health provider to attend
This program is offered in response to the demand for accessibility for mental health professionals, not only to meet the prerequisite requirement for Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy (SCIP), but also provides necessary tools to enhance an understanding of the role of self-compassion in the practice of counseling and psychotherapy.
This course includes weekly sessions of 2.5 hours each, in addition to the 4-hour retreat.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the theory and research supporting mindful self-compassion
- Develop and apply self-compassion practices to motivate themselves with encouragement rather than self-criticism
- Assess and manage difficult situations and emotions with greater moment-to-moment acceptance
- Develop and apply self-compassion practices to respond to feelings of failure or inadequacy with self-kindness
- Transform difficult relationships, old and new, through self-validation
- Utilize the art of savoring and self-appreciation to overcome negative attention bias
- Apply core mindfulness and self-compassion practices into daily life
- Demonstrate simple self-compassion practices to patients, students, or clients

Sheri Geller, PhD is:
- Author, Clinical Psychologist, and Certified Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher
- Leading figure in the field of therapeutic presence
- Over 30 years of experience integrating psychology and mindfulness
- Author of “Therapeutic Presence: A Mindful Approach to Effective Therapeutic Relationships” (2nd Edition, 2022) with Leslie Greenberg
- Author of “A Practical Guide to Cultivating Therapeutic Presence” (2017)
- Co-editor of “Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy: A Clinical Handbook”
- Founder of the Therapeutic Rhythm and Mindfulness Program (TRM™)
- Faculty member at York University
- Co-director of the Centre for MindBody Health in Toronto
- Actively involved in various professional committees

Anna Friis, PhD is:
- Certified Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher and health psychologist in private practice in Auckland, New Zealand
- Specializes in mindfulness and compassion-based therapy
- Life-long practitioner of Ashtanga yoga, which influenced her evolution as an MSC practitioner and teacher
- Former journalist with a substantial career as the director of a public relations company specializing in crisis management
- Inspired by corporate life to pursue a Master’s degree investigating the effects of stress and meditation on the autonomic nervous system
- Doctoral research focused on the psychological and physiological effects of mindful self-compassion training
- Published research in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the scientific understanding of self-compassion’s mind-body effects
- Focused on contributing to projects that promote a kinder and more just world alongside her clinical and teaching work
